Description
You’ve built the painting practice. Now let’s reconnect with it, strengthen it, and push it further. Each week brings one new theme and one 12×12″ painting. You’ll have a deadline, a community cheering you on, and my guidance to help you explore new ideas. Expect to be challenged, finish more paintings, and possibly reshape your practice.
Open to Happy Habit alumni and experienced painters.

SUBJECTS TO BE EXPLORED
Still life, floral, cityscape (or interior), landscape (bring your own reference photos – 1 per week). The four paintings could become a series or stand alone, up to you! There is a possibility of having a pop-up show for the paintings we created during this class (the show is optional, but a great way to commit and finish the work :).
SUPPLIES LIST (for acrylics):
4 12 x 12″ substrates: They can be 2″ deep cradle panels, Masonite panel, or 2″ deep edge canvas. Choose depending on your budget or whether you prefer framing or not; I would choose the same for the 4 paintings unless you want to experiment with different substrates)
Brushes: I like synthetic flats, Silver Bristlon, from #4 to #10 or from 1/4 inch to 1 inch wide, plus a #00 for signing. Bring your favorites, but not tiny brushes.
Paint: I use a split primary palette (a warm and a cool of each primary plus white and raw umber), but feel free to bring your own palette, or experiment with a color(s) you’ve never tried before (but no more than 9 colors on your palette at a time)
These are the colors I use (but bring your favorites):
- Cadmium red (warm red)
- Alizarin Crimson (cool red)
- Lemon Yellow (or yellow light) (cool yellow)
- Cadmium yellow (warm yellow)
- Ultramarine blue
- Phthalo Blue (or cerulean)
- Titanium white
- Raw Umber
- Magenta (in some cases, ex.: when I know I’ll be painting pink flowers)
Palette: Masterson palette (or palette with a lid) and paper palette or freezer paper.
Bucket for water
Spray bottle
Paper towels or rag
A paper planner or Google Calendar
Reference photos: Bring them printed or on a tablet. If color is a challenge for you, bring them printed in full color. Already cropped to a square. (subjects: 1 still life, 1 floral, 1 landscape, 1 cityscape or interior)
Easel: We provide tabletop easels. If you prefer to paint standing, bring your own portable easel.
I use acrylics, but if you prefer and know how to use oils and paint alla prima, feel free to use them and bring odorless paint and medium, and keep any medium and solvents covered at all times (the only thing with oils is that if we end up having a pop-up show right after the class ends, your paintings won’t be dry)
