CLASS DESCRIPTION
If you want to seriously start painting, this is the class for you!
I believe in solid foundations, and this beginner painting class will give you that. You will finish this class knowing the basics of value, color, and composition, and how to apply them to your paintings. I will also guide you from start to finish, step by step, on your first (or third!) still life painting from a photo I will provide. I will also offer you the best studio practices that will help you paint frequently because that’s the secret to improving faster!
With these essentials, you will be able to continue exploring the wonderful world of painting on your own…until we meet in a future class 😉
How will it work?
We will meet 3 consecutive days, live on Zoom, for about 1.5 hours daily. (I will record the classes in case you can’t participate live). Each day we will talk about one painting topic, and you will do an exercise right after class or at any time before the next one.
After the third lesson, you will have a day to finish a painting. You will have access to a step-by-step painting demonstration. That way you can paint along with me at your own pace.
On the 5th day, we will meet again to talk about your work, give you feedback, and answer any questions.

SUPPLIES LIST
If this is your first painting class, buy the minimum amount of supplies required: panels or canvases, paint, brushes, charcoal, paper palette, an inexpensive water spray, and paper towels. Once you are sure you want to keep going, invest in the most expensive items: easel, palette with lid, more brushes, more paint, etc.
SURFACE: (I work on wood panels, but feel free to bring canvas if you prefer)
- 4 6 x 6 inch panels or canvasses (avoid SOHO)2 8 x 8 inch panels or canvasses (the least expensive)A small sketchpad (or printer paper, or any white paper you have available)Soft vine charcoal (one stick is enough). They have packets of 3 sticks here.
ACRYLIC PAINT: I recommend Lukas (less expensive), Liquitex heavy body or Golden (more expensive). For this class small tubes or containers are more than enough.
- Titanium White (any brand)
- Ultramarine blue (any brand)
- Pthalo Blue (any brand)
- Lemon Yellow (if Lukas), or Cadmiun Yellow Light (if Liquitex)
- Cadmiun Yellow Medium (buy just Liquitex or Golden for this color, not Lukas)
- Cadmium Red Deep (if Lukas), Cadmium Red Medium (if Liquitex)
- Alizarin Crimson (any brand)
PALETTE: Surface you use to pour your paint and mix. I like the Masterson Palette, but please use any palette you already own, or a disposable palette (not smaller than 16 x 12”).
BRUSHES: Use whatever you already own, but if purchasing: buy synthetic flat brushes sizes #2, #4, #6 and #8 (I like the brand Silver Bristlon but feel free to buy any brand, just ask for flats and synthetic)
OTHER:
- Small Water Spray (to keep paint wet)
- Color wheel (I will send you one you can print, but if you want to buy one, you won’t regret it)
- 1 roll of paper towels
- Bucket for water (to clean brushes).
- A 32 oz yogurt container works (without the yogurt 😉 or anything similar.
